Looking For A Jarrah Hardwood Floor?
Jarrah Timber (Eucalyptus Marginata) is an Australian hardwood renowned around the world for its rich red colour, versatility, durability and strength in a wide range of interior and exterior applications.
This hardwood ranges from deep browns to burgundy hues and the timber has a moderately coarse and even textured grain. The occasional wavy and interlocking grain produces a wood that has a classic fiddle-back design. This fiddle-back pattern makes this hardwood a beautiful flooring wood and that why it is a highly regarded, prized and in high demand all over the world.
As this hardwood can only be sourced from old growth and native forest regrowth in Western Australia. Many of these forests are now reserved and little to no Jarrah is currently grown in commercial plantations. This limits supply while some recycled material is available; this is also a restricted resource as it relies on the demolition of existing buildings.
The Many Uses of Jarrah
Jarrah timber has a history in being used in wharf, jetty and bridge construction, train line sleepers, cross-arms, posts and pylons, and for road bases. Its used in structural building include posts and poles, framing, flooring, lining, decking and cladding.
The wood is also very versatile and can be used for wood turning, making it useful in the manufacture of high quality indoor furniture and weather resistant outdoor furniture that stands the test of time.
Once seasoned and if tools are sharp, the wood can be relatively easy to work with, despite its density and hardness. It can be machined and turned easily but care must should be taken when nailing, due to the density. It is recommended to pre-drill before nailing. Paint, stain and polish are all readily accepted by this timber and when properly finished, will look amazing.
