Queensland “Spotted” Gum is Australia’s own top-of-the-line premium hardwood timber. It has a Janka rating of 11 (so its very hard) and is perfect for flooring, outside and inside stairs, decking, and so on.
“Spotted Gum” refers to the tree types itself. Due to its strength and resilience of the timber, it has traditionally been used for engineering purposes such as bridge and wharf construction, railway sleepers and mining and building frame work.
Today this highly prized Australian hardwood has found its way into our homes. Throughout the world Architects, Engineers and Designers used this wood in their work, as it is extremely valued for it’s back-sawn grain structure, attractive markings and beautiful colour.
Spotted (Eucalyptus) Gum – Corymbia Maculata
The Spot gum is an Eucalyptus tree which is only found in Australia. Four types of this tree grows along the east coast of Australia, from northeast Victoria to the northern tablelands of Queensland, with some also growing in some western areas of southern Queensland. These trees have a straight and slender trunk, with bark that sheds off in spots. This gives the trees it’s distinctive and wonderful “spotted” appearance.
The Spotted Gum appearance changes in between the several tree species but its durability class or other strength properties always remain s the same.
Queensland trees have a distinct red hue colour whereas the New South Wales gum tree, differs from a light brown to a dark shade of brown. No 2 trees have the same patten or colour. The wavy grain can produce an appealing fiddle-back figure, as mention above, and this is the reason this wood is so highly valued and prized.
