Why Select Western Red Cedar Wood?
The Western (Thuja Plicata) Red Cedar is a softwood that grows in British Columbia and some of the western states of the USA (Washington, Oregon, Montana and Idaho).
This wood is loved for its rich and inviting earthy tones. It’s a durable softwood and is great to use in external cladding and windows. Its colour ranges from a pale brown or honey colour through to a richer dark brown, while old timber can be somewhat darker in appearance. It has a fine texture and straight grain.
A Multipurpose Wood
The main reason this softwood is used for include, cladding, linings, joinery, windows, doors and roofing shingles. A natural preservative in the wood, provide resistance to fungus and insect attack, and its low density, provides good insulation qualities. It can handle many types of weather conditions due to its natural durability.
Western Red Cedar is a durable, yet soft wood and is easy and excellent to work with. It cuts, machines and glues well and readily accepts painted, oils, stained and polish. It screws and nails well but if the wood is or gets damp it can be corrosive to copper and iron, so a recommendation is to use, galvanized products (screws, nails) should be used when needed.
